Wayne Kirby Simpson (December 2, 1948 in Los Angeles, California), is a former professional baseball player who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1970-1977. He played for the Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies, and California Angels. Hank Aaron got his 3,000th career hit off Simpson.
Simpson was 14-3 with a 3.02 Earned Run Average as a rookie in 1970. He was selected to play for the National League in the 1970 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The Cincinnati Reds made it to the World Series in 1970 but Simpson didn't pitch in the postseason. He tore ligaments in his pitching arm in his rookie season. Simpson pitched for another seven seasons was never able to come near his impressive rookie season numbers.
Simpson has the highest Game Score (85) in Reds history for a pitching debut, April 9, 1970.[1]
